Los Angeles is one of the most expensive car markets in the country. High demand, limited inventory at popular dealers, and some of the most aggressive finance offices in the business mean that LA car buyers regularly overpay — sometimes by thousands of dollars — without realizing it.
Here’s what to watch out for and how to protect yourself.
This is the single most common mistake LA car buyers make. When you walk into a dealership and say “I want to stay under $600 a month,” you’ve just given the salesperson the only number that matters — to them.
A savvy dealer can fit almost anything into a $600 monthly payment by stretching the loan term to 72 or 84 months, increasing your interest rate slightly, or rolling fees into the financed amount. You get your payment. They get their profit.
The fix: Always negotiate the out-the-door price first. Get that number in writing before any payment or financing conversation starts.
The sticker price (MSRP) is not what the dealer paid for the vehicle. Invoice price is what the dealer actually paid. The difference can be $1,000 to $8,000 depending on the vehicle.
Before you visit any dealer, look up the invoice price on Edmunds or TrueCar. That’s your starting point for negotiation — not the sticker.
You’ve agreed on the car and the price. You’re excited. You sit down in the finance office and suddenly there are menus full of add-ons: extended warranties, paint protection, wheel protection, gap insurance, tire and wheel coverage, and more.
These are almost all highly profitable for the dealer and highly unnecessary for the buyer. GAP insurance, if you need it at all, is available through your own insurance company for a fraction of what a dealer charges. Extended warranties are rarely cost-effective.
The fix: Before you go in, decide in advance that you will decline all add-ons. Say “no thank you” to everything. You can always buy GAP insurance and extended warranties later if you decide you want them.
LA dealers add fees that can total $1,000 to $3,000 on top of the negotiated price. Documentation fees, dealer prep fees, advertising fees — some are mandatory, some are made up.
Always ask for a complete breakdown of all fees before signing. Ask which fees are mandated by the state (registration, taxes) and which are discretionary. Discretionary fees are negotiable.
If you’re leasing, the monthly payment is driven by three things: the money factor (interest rate), the residual value (what the car is worth at lease end), and the capitalized cost (the negotiated selling price).
Dealers rarely advertise the money factor or residual. You have to ask, and you have to know whether what they’re quoting is good or inflated. MF Leases and Edmunds publish monthly lease programs for most brands — check them before you go in.
Dealerships create artificial urgency. “This deal is only good today.” “Someone else is coming to look at it this afternoon.” “This is the last one at this price.”
Almost none of this is true. Inventory turns slowly. The deal will almost always be there tomorrow. The urgency is a sales tactic.
The fix: Never make a major financial decision under artificial time pressure. If the dealer won’t hold the deal for 24 hours while you think it through, walk away.
Everything above describes the negotiation battle you’re walking into alone. The alternative is to use an auto broker — someone who already knows all of these tactics, has seen every version of every trick, and negotiates dozens of deals per month.
